Natalia Gaia is a freelance photographer and independent filmmaker living in Mexico City. She studied photography and majored in graphic design at ENAP/UNAM. She has worked at El Economista, Casa del Lago UNAM and the Secretaría de Salud. Her work has been published in various outlets and magazines; she has also participated in collective exhibitions and collaborated on the book Sabores del Barrio (2018) from Casa Gallina.

 

Her first documentary, Poesía en la niebla (2019) follows a group of international artists visiting CECAM, a music school for children/teenagers in the mountains of Oaxaca. It documents an exchange of artistic traditions and the intergenerational collaboration of poetry and music. Other films include Stepping Back (2020) and Archive Litany (2021) both with the performance poet Anne Waldman; and Skid Bid (2021), a short film from a recording session with San Francisco poet laureate Tongo Eisen-Martin. Her most recent work is A Spark Catches (2022) which is episode 3 of her project Azotea, an ongoing poetry film series produced by Fast Speaking Music.

 

Her films have been screened internationally at Naropa University, Centre Pompidou, Fort Collins Book Festival, The Poetry Project’s Marathon, Festival Poet.e.s.s.e.s, among others.
